The Movement started in a small way in the 1860s in the houses and studios of a group of artists and designers such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Morris and Burne-Jones. Architects, poets, critics, philosophers and craftworkers would come together in the next couple of decades and create pieces influenced by the Orient with the Grosvenor gallery on Bond street in London providing a outlet for the artists to exhibit. Their motto "Art for art's sake" showed a rebellion against the design of the times and a desire to generate art for it’s pure beauty.
Godwin an architect, designed James Mc Neill Whilster’s studio and created some of the most innovative furniture of the times.
This settee’s structure shows the direct influence of Japonisme, one of the movement’s great inspiration. It’s paired-down modernity appeals to our contemporary taste. This piece might have been ebonised and later restained.
