Description
Paintings like this one were used in China as an important part of the practice of ancestor worship. Families would commemorate their ancestors with food offerings and rituals. Commemorative portraits were usually near life size and painted from a front perspective, with the subjects normally sitting and wearing robes to show the insignia of their rank and status. Original ancestor paintings are now rare and highly sought after. Our paintings are reproductions and smaller in size, but are accurate versions of old paintings. They are supplied mounted and framed as shown. This one depicts the wife of a high ranking official in yellow robes, including the crane badge that signified her husband's position.
