Description
Ancestor paintings like this were used in China as an important part of the practice of ancestor worship. Families would remember and worship their ancestors with offerings. Portraits were painted from front on and usually life size, with the subjects normally seated and wearing robes to show their rank badge. Original ancestor paintings are now rare and highly sought after. Our paintings are reproductions and smaller in size, but are accurate versions of old paintings. They are supplied mounted and framed as shown. This one depicts the wife of a high ranking official in red robes, including the crane badge that signified her husband's position.
