Description
Gujarat, circa 1880
This beautifully carved Indian dowry chest is a lovely example of a style that was distinctive to the province of Gujarat in Northern India. The front is divided into ten panels, each beautifully decorated in carved relief to show floral patterns and fauna, including one showing a man seated atop a large elephant. Protruding ends at each side are carved in the form of peacocks and, at the bottom, horse heads. Each of the ten panels is framed in red, once bright but now blending more subtly with the wood. The upper and lower frames are also carved in flowing geometric patterns. The chest has a single door that opens out to the full space inside, and sits on splayed legs supported with iron braces.
