Description
Hebei, circa 1880
This decorative, intricately carved panel once formed part of larger divider or internal window panel in a Chinese home. It comes from the city of Hefei in Hebei province, beautifully carved with floral patterns and, in the centre, a male and female figure. The man on the left hand side carries a bow, and is possibly a representation of the god of archery in Chinese mythology, Hou Yi. The woman would therefore be his wife, the moon goddess Chang'e.
