Description
This cute little table in elm is from Shanxi province, the old black lacquer finish now worn around the top surface and feet. It would have been used on the 'kang' - an earth, brick or stone platform that was used for reclining on during the day and which would be heated from underneath in the colder months. Low level cabinets and tables like this were used for serving food or as display surfaces. The upturned ends at the top of this table suggest that it might have been used as an altar surface for ancestor offerings. The table's front spandrels and apron are delicately carved and it includes three shallow drawers. Great today as a little TV stand or coffee table.
