Description
Hebei, circa 1900
This beautiful carving was produced as a lintel in Hebei province, northern China around the turn of the 20th century. Along with other carvings, it would have adorned the entrance or doorway in the home of a wealthy family. The main carved section features a wonderful scrolling lattice pattern, interspersed with carvings of six Chinese elders or deities. Twoards each end and set centrally at the bottom is a winged beast - possibly a bat to represent good fortune. This main section is set into a frame above and to the sides, with the frame's feet ending in carvings of opposing mythical lions or foo dogs - offering protection to the household. Beautifully detailed, the lintel would make a lovely, unusual wall decoration today mounted over a bed or console.
