Description
Jiangsu, circa 1850
Made from beech wood and with intricate geometric patterns and carvings, this arch shaped panel once formed the front of a traditional Chinese four-post marriage bed. It was saved as a single piece and today would make an unusual headboard, perhaps as a frame for a television, or just a wonderful, stand-alone wall feature. The upper part of the panel is made up of intersecting patterns made from individually joined, mitred pieces of wood. These are interspersed with small carved floral motifs, while the main carving at the top shows four finely robed figures with detailed features.
At the base of each side of the panel are further larger carvings set within a circular frame. These each show further male and female figures carved in deep relief, representing scenes from Chinese legend or popular stories. Each of these circular carvings is supported beneath by a carved 'foo dog' - the mythcial lions that acted as guardians and warded off evil.
