Description
The random looking design of this warm elm, square wall panel is referred to by the Chinese as 'cracked ice' and is made up of individual mortised pieces of wood. This part of the panel, as well as the outer frame, is made of fir wood, while the central, circular piece is in camphor - a hard wood that is ideal for carving. The carvings show scenes from nature such as birds or fish (the designs vary). The panels are reproductions of similar original pieces that would be used as window panels in a Chinese home. They come with brass fittings at the top so that they can be mounted on a wall and the effect of the resulting shadows against a wall in the evening light is particularly striking.
