Description
This lovely black lacquer chair has the same 'S' shaped legs forming an hourglass shape at the front and back, as well as a slightly curved seat with a rattan inlay, it goes perfectly with our cross legged desk or can be used separately for occasional seating. Based on the classic Chinese horseshoe armchair but in a more colonial style, the middle backrest is carved in relief with a 'ruyi', symbolising prosperity, while above this is a lotus flower to denote long life and wealth. The narrow spindles either side that support the curved backrest are not often seen in Chinese furniture - although they did appear on chairs in the late Qing dynasty, specifically on smaller pieces known as rose chairs, used normally in ladies' quarters.
