Description
Gujarat, 19th century
This antique dowry chest is in a style known as a kothla majus in India. Made from heavy teak wood, it has been reduced in depth and the original fixed front panel has been converted into two doors to create a stunning sideboard that is more practical for a modern setting.
This particular style of chest is distinctive to India's Gujarat province. It would have originally stored valuables and expensive fabrics and would have been presented as part of a bride's dowry to the parents of her new husband.
