Description
Gansu, circa 1880
This spacious, imposing cabinet is crafted from walnut and was produced in Gansu province in western China. Its unique style is representative of Gansu furniture, where walnut was once abundant in the region. Originally, only the central two doors were fitted, but as part of the the cabinet's restoration the sides have been opened up and a shelf has been added for practicality. The cabinet features thick frames that extend into the top and are sculpted at the bottom in a 'deer hoof' design distinctive of Gansu furniture. After being sympathetically restored and finished, the walnut's natural beauty shines through in a rich tone. At nearly two metres wide, the cabinet would serve as a striking statement piece and provides ample storage space.
