Description
Beijing, circa 1880
This lovely old sideboard is from Beijing, produced towards the end of the nineteenth century from elm wood. It would once have had a lacquered finish but has been stripped back to show the pale, natural wood, with its lovely grain and character. The interior still shows the original colour, though now worn. The heavy brass hinges and circular door plates are typical of furniture from Beijing and the surrounding regions, and provide a nice detail and contrast with the pale finish. Four drawers and removable shelves inside the two sets of doors provide plenty of practical storage space. With a simple design and natural, rustic tone the sideboard would fit easily into either a modern or traditional interior.
