Description
Qinghai, circa 1880
This large cabinet has a storage section at the bottom, with accessed through four doors, as well as an open shelf section above. It is in a style unique to Qinghai province in western China, and is beautifully decorated with paintings of flowers and butterflies, and with a carved frame around the shelf space. When it was produced only the central doors would have been fitted, giving access to the full space inside. This was a typical feature of Qinghai cabinets, supposedly making it more difficult for theives to quickly reach the outer parts of the interior. The two extra doors have been added more recently using the old fixed panels, and fitted with simple brass handles. It is rare now to find cabinets like this is such excellent, and original condition. This would make a wonderful accent piece in a hallway or reception room.
