Description
Jiangsu, circa 1880
This long, intricately carved panel once formed the upper front section of a Chinese marriage bed. It is made from elm with a light, lacquered finish to deepen the tone of the wood. Set within the outer frame are individual pieces of wood joined with mortise and tenons to form a fluid, scrolling pattern set with various spacers in the form of flowers.
There are three main carvings - two in a scolloped, circular format at each end and a larger one set centrally. These are each carved with scenes most likely from Chinese legend, depicting various figures including, on the central section, a mother and her children. Today the panel would make a wonderful wall decoration, perhaps mounted over a console or sideboard in a reception room, or hung over a bed.
