Description
Jiangsu, circa 1850
This hardwood carving was once part of a Chinese marriage bed, which would have boasted many similar carved panels around its four sides. This one incorporates three carvings in deep relief. The two outer panels depict flower bouquets, while in the middle five characters are shown in a scene from court. A 'foo dog' sits atop the left and right hand struts, offering protection against evil as the mythological guardians of Chinese culture. The carving originates from Nanjing - the capital of Jiangsu province and at one time China's capital during the Ming dynasty. It would make an interesting wall feature today.
