History of the Breton Top

The Breton shirt (La Marinière) started life as a functional fisherman’s work outfit.

In 1858 the French Navy-Wear Act, stated that all mariners were required to wear a blue and white striped top (21 white and 20 cobalt blue stripes) to aid visibility of the mariner should  they fall into the sea. Sailors, particularly around the busy ports of Brittany, were soon wearing this practical, long lasting and comfortable garment. Typically being made of quality knitted jersey cotton with long sleeves and a boat neckline.

In 1917 Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel popularised the stripy garment introducing it as a ladies fashion item. By the 50’s and 60’s the Marinière had become a symbol for artists and intellectuals alike. Picasso, Brigitte Bardot and Jean Paul Gaultier, were all fans of what became known as the Breton style.

To this day the effortless Breton top is as versatile as ever. Perfect for those casual or smarter moments and definitely still a winner on board. La Marinière is designed with everyone in mind and will last a lifetime.
