Floral Bonanza at the new RHS Chatsworth show

As Claude Monet once said “I must have flowers, always, and always”; we agree, and to honour the inaugural Chatsworth flower show, L’Atelier will be showcasing a fascinating range of applications of flowers and floral motifs to the decoration of interiors, from furniture to lighting to cushions to wall art – and categories that cross these boundaries.

Taking center stage on the stand is a George III oak ebonized secretaire cabinet. The stylized floral and leaf motifs on the various panels and sides of the piece were beautifully hand-carved in the Victorian period as the fashion for floral decoration eclipsed the more classical look of the original piece.
From another continent, culture and time, you will see an imaginary city painted on cloth from Udaipur in India (1970-90) which features the most magnificent depiction of trees inspired by the local flora, again stylized in form, setting off the more classical forms of the city architecture. More naturalistically, watercolours and gouaches made a century ago exactly in 1917 will adorn the walls of our stand. In Britain, Hilda Clegg a scholarship student of the prestigious Leeds College of Art created beautiful floral compositions as part of her art portfolio.

From France, designers including the painter Raoul Dufy produced textile design gouaches for the famous silk manufacturer Bianchini Ferier in Lyon to use in the fashion industry, with floral depictions a common theme. Selections from this important archive will showcase how effectively the original designs for textiles to be worn can serve as beautiful wall art.

Antique, vintage and contemporary metal work will be showcased in the form of cloisonnés, sculptures, jewellery and lighting and will show how floral designs adapt themselves to different mediums and uses – with a multitude of different effects.
