Spring is nearly upon us, so now is the perfect time to get planning your summer garden make-over.  Create the ideal place to relax with family and friends in the warm evenings, with good food & a glass of wine or two!

There are many ways to enhance your garden project using tiles, from an alfresco dining area to garden paths or statement walls!  For the more creative upcycling enthusiasts why not turn a pallet into a lovely tiled table top or even a fire pit cover?

Let us help you make your outdoor tiles the garden show stopper!

First things first though!
Which tiles are suitable for use outdoors?

1. Use a frost proof tile (Porcelain tile)

With the great British weather you need to make sure any tile you use outdoors is frost proof.  A porcelain tile is frost proof as it has very low absorption.

We wouldn't suggest you used all types of porcelain tiles in all outside installations. Polished and honed porcelain is exceptionally slippery when wet, so avoid using them on any external floor areas - for safety, select from our outdoor collection, as you will need an anti-slip tile in most areas.

If however you have a patio in your garden and only ever use it when it's sunny and not in the wet, then you can use a porcelain frost proof tile which doesn't have the same degree of slip resistance. It's good to be aware that the higher the PTV rating the better the degree of slip resistance.

2. Anti-slip tiles

If the tiles are being walked on in the wet , or in a high traffic area such as a path to your front door, or on a step or gradient then you will need an anti-slip tile.    Look for tiles that say "anti-slip" or have a PTV+ 36(wet) slip rating.

So, all you just need to consider is where in the garden you are going to use the tile and if you will be walking over it regularly in the wet! If so, use an anti-slip porcelain tile, if not you can use any porcelain tile as they are frost-proof, so take your pick!

We can now turn our attention to the fun bit and how you inject a bit of personality and style into the garden!

Laying Outdoor Tiles

All of our exterior tiles should be laid on a solid concrete substrate that has a minimum thickness of 50mm. The tiles are then simply laid and grouted as they would be if you were tiling a concrete floor internally.

Maintanance

Your fabulous tiled surfaces really shouldn't need much more than a yearly jet wash and a regular brush or hose down to remove leaves and any traces of dirt. It really is that easy!

Take the house into the garden.

A flow of floor finish from one area of the home to another can give the illusion of more space. It also has the effect of extending the home into the garden if you use the same tiles indoors and then out. Baked has tiles that can be used both indoors and out - we also have tiles with a natural finish for indoors and a matching anti-slip for external spaces.

Our fabulous Limestone collection. An authentic looking limestone effect porcelain, with no maintenance and  suitable for inside and out.  It's simply beautiful.
