Wayfair’s Resident Style Advisor, Nadia McCowan Hill, shares her tips and tricks to choosing an artificial Christmas tree

Why go faux?

The beauty of an artificial tree is the variety of styles there are to choose from. Find the perfect height, shape and colour to match your scheme, with a Christmas tree that you can unbox and decorate year after year. Easy to assemble with minimal mess and no chance of falling pine needles, the focal point of your celebrations can look just as good as the real thing.

As a result of the various lockdowns and uncertainty caused in the last couple of years, we have seen a real trend for shoppers embracing the opportunity to celebrate Christmas earlier than ever. Unlike its real counterpart, a faux tree is guaranteed to last the full festive period, however early you want to put it up.

Christmas prep

Before settling on your tree, a few practical pointers to ensure it’s a purchase you’ll enjoy for many Christmases to come and you get exactly what you want: For some general inspiration, Pinterest and Instagram are a brilliant source to spark ideas. The colour of the tree can change the overall look of the room. Think about where you plan to  place the tree, how much space you have and check the ceiling height. Lots of faux trees come with a tree stand, but it’s always best to check this detail before ordering in case it’s something you need to consider purchasing.

Frosted and flocked

Invite a wonderfully festive winter wonderland feel with a flocked tree with snow-tipped branches. This style of tree complements a variety of schemes, from traditional red and white, Scandi,  country woodland to sparkling silver displays.

Pre-lit

A pre-lit tree is a fuss-free way to add the magical dusting of twinkling lights without the need for untangling of wires, with guaranteed coverage on all branches. Offering a speedier set up, options include warm white, colourful and multi-function LED lights for a cosy and inviting atmosphere.

Space savers

Many of us don’t have the luxury of space for displaying a 6ft tall tree in our homes, but don’t be disheartened. Even the most petite abode can be packed full of Christmas charm with some easy DIY and a touch of imagination. If height isn’t a problem but the space you are decorating is narrow, opt for a skinny tree that won’t take up much width. Choose a tabletop sized tree to add festive cheer to windowsills or hallway consoles.

Statement additions

Having a second tree is commonplace in many homes, with a number of households embracing the spirit of the season and decorating multiple rooms. In 2021, searches for white Christmas trees was a popular style searched on Wayfair.co.uk. If you prefer to keep your main tree traditional or dressed with treasured decs from years gone by, then a second tree allows you to have a little more fun. Add a pop of colour and embrace the opportunity to get creative. With Barbie-inspired interiors set to be big in 2023, get ahead of the curve with a pink-tastic tree this December!

Branch out

A twig tree is an elegant accessory, which works well with minimal styling. A tree with LED lights will cast an ambient glow and brighten up a dull corner. Add a few select stylish baubles to or leave bare for a cool, contemporary look.
