I recently participated in a charity event for Smart Work Leeds- a charity helping women dress confidently to help them secure interviews and jobs.

I bought some second hand clothes and they were put in a white paper bag. When I returned home and put my clothes in my wadrobe I was left with this big white paper bag.

As a stylist I had been thinking on how to decorate my mantelpiece for Christmas, I wanted to do something different. For a few years now in interiors magazines, there nearly has been a "competition" on the wildest and most flamboyant mantel decoration. What if I did it more simply? What if I used elements I had, elements that I could recycle, elements which wouldnt cost the earth?

I suddenly had the idea to use the paper bag and started cutting out triangles, I found some foil papers in my cupboard and I started decorating these triangles. As the glue dried, the paper started curling and creating these wonderful flowing shapes. I then decided to string them with some very fine wire I had and attach them to the mirror. The triangles adorned with beautiful colours  (often found on glass baubles)  reflected the light by day and by night and into the beautiful mirror.

I also decorated the mantel with some antique and vintage cut glass and vintage baubles. The cut glass, art work and candleholder are available in my shop. Everything took me a few hours but it was lovely to craft and relax and see my vision slowly taking shape.

What do you think?
