Who can resist the smell of fresh coffee? In all its variations, coffee is probably the most popular hot drink in the world. Freshly brewed, it makes us awake and alert – whether at home at the breakfast table, on a camping trip or out in nature.
The preparation methods are as diverse as the coffee cultures around the world: hand filter, capsule machine, fully automatic machine, espresso pot, French press or percolator. The latter has almost fallen into oblivion in this country, although this traditional form of coffee preparation through water circulation is as simple as it is gentle. The best about it is that percolator coffee can be made anywhere, because apart from the special pot, all that is needed is a heat source. The percolator works on the camping stove, the flame of the Gas Table or the grill, however, preparation directly in the open fire is the real thing. While the coffee boils over the flames, adventurers listen to the crackling of the fire and take a deep breath of the freshly brewed coffee aromas. After a hot cup of strong coffee, the next outdoor adventure can begin.
Coffee from the fire
In percolators made of fireproof stainless steel or enamel, the coffee boils over the fire or directly in the embers. Freshly ground coffee beans of medium roast taste best. The beans are coarsely ground with a coffee grinder or mortar and poured into the percolator's sieve container. Now add water to the pot and put it on the fireplace.
According to the percolator principle, the boiling water rises through a tube in the pot due to the resulting steam pressure and runs from above through the sieve filled with coffee powder. The hot water releases the aromas and runs down again. There it mixes with the remaining water and rises again.
Since percolators do not require an additional filter, the coffee oils remain in the coffee during preparation and make it particularly aromatic. The longer the mixture circulates, the stronger the result. Different coffee roasts, grains and boiling times give fragrant coffee lovers a variety of ways to prepare their percolator coffee. This is why making coffee in the open air an adventure in itself.

Instructions:
The perfect adventure coffee with the Perkomax
With the Perkomax, adventurers brew aromatic coffee under the open sky directly in the fire. Both the enamel model and the stainless-steel percolator work on the flame of the gas table or camping cooker, on the grilling grate as well as on conventional hotplates. With a filling capacity of 1.3 to 3 litres, the percolators provide plenty of coffee for a cosy breakfast or an extended coffee break in a large group.
Unlike other manual preparations such as the hand filter or French press, brewing coffee with the percolator may take a little longer and more practice. But with this step-by-step guide, percolator coffee becomes an absolute outdoor pleasure.

The right bean:
Use coarsely ground coffee powder. Either use a ready-made blend or carefully crush the beans of your choice in a mortar or coffee grinder. Coarse coffee powder prevents the percolator's sieve holes from getting clogging during brewing or the coffee grounds from ending up in the cup later on. Coarse ground coffee also reduces the contact time of the water with the coffee powder. This prevents over-extraction and the coffee does not get bitter.
The type of bean is a matter of taste, but medium coffee roasts are well suited. Very light filter coffee quickly become sour and strong espresso roasts are often too dominant.

The optimal preparation:
1. Fill sufficient drinking water into the percolator. Make sure to observe the minimum and maximum filling levels. The water must not come into direct contact with the filter basket.
2. Pour the desired amount of coffee into the filter basket to a maximum of just below the upper end of the tube. We recommend the following quantities for the individual Petromax percolator models:
approx. 8 tsp in 1.3 litre enamel Perkomax
approx. 13 tsp in 1.5 litre stainless steel Perkomax
approx. 25 tsp in 3 litre stainless steel Perkomax
3. Close the lid and keep it closed during the brewing process. Note: For the enamel percolator, turn the “nose” on the lid to the handle before closing.
4. Take care of the fireplace. Whether on the camping stove or over the campfire, the percolator should get enough heat to bring the water to the boil.
5. You can hear it clearly when the water starts to boil. With the stainless-steel Perkomax, you can even watch the brewing process through the glass knob.
The optimum boiling time for the small percolators is 12-13 minutes, for the large model about 15 minutes. Basically, the longer the coffee boils, the stronger it will be. Try out how you like the coffee from the percolator best.
6. When the coffee is ready, take it off the fireplace and pour it either with the Petromax Pouring Aid or with heat-resistant gloves.
7. Now it's time to sit back and enjoy!
