Restoring a house that had at times been a bakery, art gallery and corner shop to its former Victorian glory is a tall order in anyone’s books. But that’s exactly the task that Olly and Rowan undertook when they bought a property just outside Cambridge that was in need of more than just a little TLC. With Matki by their side, however, ensuring their bathroom met their Victorian theme dream was the least of their worries.
“Our house hadn’t been treated well and needed a new lease of life” explained Olly. “We wanted to respect its history by restoring it back to the way it looked when it was built in the late nineteenth century.”

With a Victorian theme for the bathroom décor already decided, the couple were looking for the perfect shower to complement their vision. “For our main bathroom, we’d already chosen deep-green tiles in a classic Victorian style” Rowan tells us. “We wanted an antique-looking shower to match, as well as one for our smaller bathroom, so we turned to Matki for help.”

The couple had already shopped around for the right shower, but with no luck. They found their options didn’t really match their brief for an authentic Victoriana feel and were pricey to boot. Enter Raph from Matki. “When we spoke to Raph, he was so helpful” Olly recalls. “He told us all about Matki’s new range in aged brass, which is when we knew we’d hit the jackpot. It was exactly what we were looking for.”
With Raph’s guidance, Olly and Rowan opted for the Classica shower frame in Aged Brass. “We couldn’t believe anyone made a shower like that!” says Rowan. “It’s hard to find a shower to fit the vibe of a Victorian bathroom as they didn’t exist back then, but the Matki Classica shower was perfect.”

To ensure installation went exactly to Olly and Rowan’s specifications, Raph insisted on being present throughout the shower fitting. “During such a stressful time, he made us feel so reassured that everything was exactly how it should be” confirmed Olly. “Raph was unbelievably kind, patient and helpful. His knowledge of the products was so impressive and he immediately understood exactly what we wanted.”
Let’s leave the final words to Rowan. “Thanks to Raph and Matki, our bathrooms were the one thing in our refurb that happened completely seamlessly. We can’t recommend them enough.”
