Ashley Cooper, marketing director at Triton Showers, explains how to achieve a minimalist bathroom aesthetic:
“A minimalist aesthetic is perfectly suited to the bathroom setting, where a crisp, functional design can help create a retreat where you can switch off from the world. Simplicity is key with this look – and can be achieved in a number of ways, from your colour palette to your bathroom fittings.
Colour palette
“A minimalist aesthetic is often considered synonymous with neutral tones. However, I’d recommend avoiding picking brilliant whites, which can often make a space look clinical. Instead, opt for off-whites, surfaces with texture and finishes that mimic natural stone materials such as marble, concrete and sandstone. The key is to keep the core colours neutral while experimenting with different finishes and shapes.
“Black fixtures and fittings can help tie the look together, whilst adding contrast in a sophisticated way. You can also introduce black into the scheme through a rimmed glass or crittall-style shower screen, framed mirrors, storage solutions and wall lights. A black electric shower unit will add a bold accent, whilst providing you with an efficient way to heat and use water – helping you save money.
Streamlined shower space
“When choosing a shower for a minimalist bathroom, it’s important to consider the visual impact it will have on the space, as well as whether you have an enclosure or shower over bath set-up. Selecting a streamlined shower, like ENVi®, will keep the cubicle looking neat and tidy without impeding on the showering area. When choosing an enclosure, consider pairing the shower with a waterfall showerhead to reduce the need for wall fixtures – this will allow you to maximise the space available, whilst providing an open and airy feel.
“Opting for a wet room or walk-in shower will create a simple yet functional design, without the need to make room for a shower enclosure or raised shower tray – making it a great solution for smaller spaces. A shower with a waterfall showerhead will create a sleek look, complementing the open layout of the space perfectly.
“When opting for this layout, you might want to use your shower to make more of a statement through colour and design choice to add interest in an understated way. For example, circular showerheads create a classic look, whereas a rounded square options are more contemporary.
Clutter-free
“An uncluttered scheme is integral when designing a minimalist bathroom, so adequate storage is a must. Bathroom storage solutions can be sleek, adding to the room’s overall look. The options are vast, from under-sink storage and shower caddies, to tall cabinets and shelving concealed behind a mirror.
“Considering storage in the early planning stages will ensure all your lotions and potions have a designated place and don’t impede on the space. I’d also recommend thinking about how best to store your shower products, as this can often be an afterthought which results in shampoo bottles being left sprawled across the shower tray. Consider incorporating a caddy or keeping products neat in the corner of the shower. Alternatively, opting for a shower that has a built-in ledge will provide space to keep bottles within easy reach. No matter what you’d choose, I’d recommend keeping items that aren’t used daily in a nearby cupboard or drawer to keep the shower area looking tidy.”
