Focus On: Bedroom Colour Schemes

It's no secret that colour can have a big affect on our mood and hence it's important to think carefully about the colours we choose to put in our homes. This is especially important in a bedroom in order to help us relax and unwind at the end of the day. Adam Brown, MD at The Painted Furniture Company, spends a lot of time discussing the subject of colour with his customers and gives us his insights into creating a bedroom colour scheme that ticks all the boxes.

The Painted Furniture Company are proud to be able to offer their customers a choice of beautiful colours when it comes to their furniture - something made possible by the fact that the furniture is made to order here in the UK. Clearly this is a lovely choice to have however, it does mean there are certain decisions to be made and so Adam and his team are always on hand to provide help and guidance.

When approaching a decorating project many of us turn to our favourite home interiors publications, look online or use tools such as Pinterest for inspiration. When thinking about colours, creating a colour palette can also be helpful as Adam explains, "Colour is the first thing your eye notices when you walk into a room. How different colours play off of one another creates a first impression that affects your perceptions of everything else. As such, picking a colour schemes is a lot more important than most people know. When approaching a new home interior project, try using a colour wheel to create a colour palette of shades you feel work well together. A colour wheel makes it easy to do this, for example if you are looking for dynamic colours that complement one another nicely, choose two hues directly opposite on the wheel. Your colour palette can then be used as a basis for determining different shades, tints and textiles."

For bedroom colour schemes, white and grey have remained popular choices for the last five years and it's easy to see why with their cool, crisp and timeless style. The Painted Furniture Company offers a range of classic shades of white including Lilly White, Cotton and Wessex White, making it easy to create a stylish scheme whether you favour a more relaxed feel with a soft white or opt for a more minimalist sleek look with a cool white. "If you are aiming to create a homely, fresh and relaxed room, white will get you there every time. It doesn't matter what colour your walls and floors are, introducing white painted furniture into the mix will work. A classic colour is a classic for a reason" says Adam.

Of course, while it's lovely to re-do a room from top to bottom, a lot of time we may have to work around existing interior items and this is an important consideration to bear in mind when planning the new colour scheme. Adam advises, "Consider the rest of the decor you will be working with. Look at your artwork, any textiles or window dressings, the colour and tone of the floor, your existing furniture, and so forth. Those things you already have to work with might automatically disqualify some colour schemes simply because the contrast is too great." He also warns about always feeling the need to follow fashions, "All of us are drawn to certain colours. Your favourite colour might be purple while your partner's favourite is blue. Maybe the kids prefer green. The one thing to remember is that you ultimately have to live with the choice you make. So don't pick a colour scheme based on trends alone. If a particular trend does not appeal to you, don't go with it under the assumption that it will eventually grow on you."

Another point to consider when choosing a colour scheme is whether to opt for warm colours such as shades of orange, red or yellow, or cool colours like blues, greens and purples. "Cool colours are ideal for smaller rooms that you want to appear larger because of the way they recede into the broader visual spectrum", comments Adam. He continues, "Blue is often a popular choice for bedrooms. The bedroom is ultimately a place of relaxation and blue has been found to be the most soothing colour, promoting feelings of calmness. Evoking memories of sunny blue skies and vast deep oceans, it’s easy to see why a blue colour scheme has the ability to ease busy minds and aid a restful night’s sleep."

The Painted Furniture Company have carefully selected a beautiful muted standard colour palette for customers to choose from which includes an array of gorgeous shades from Truffle and Moondust Grey to Little Boy Blue and Mahogany. If customers find they do want something different or need a specific colour to match in with an existing scheme, Adam and the team can also accommodate this.  "We understand how important it is to choose the right colour scheme and we will do everything we can to help our customers ensure they are ultimately happy with their choice for many years to come," says Adam.
